Cognitive Theories of Consciousness

چکیده
In the present chapter, we first overview the precursors that allowed the development of cognitive theories of consciousness, and in particular we consider the notions of attention, working-memory, modularity and the distinction between automatic and controlled processes. Then we present a selection of influential contemporary accounts of consciousness, based on three themes: consciousness results from specific architectural elements within the cognitive system (the theories by Baars, Prinz, Tononi); some features of consciousness are in fact illusory (the theories by Dennett and Wegner); consciousness is about learning (the theories by O’Regan & Noë, Cleeremans, Lau). We conclude this chapter by considering that these cognitive theories have to set a bridge between the philosophical hard problem of consciousness, and neurobiological approaches. Biographies & Photos Vincent de Gardelle is a doctoral student supervised by Sid Kouider at the Ecole Normale Supérieure (Paris, France). His research addresses the question of biased conscious perception, by examining the perceptual illusions that might result from subject’s expectations under poor sensory evidence. Sid Kouider is a cognitive neuroscientist working at the Ecole Normale Supérieure (Paris, France) on the neurobiological and psychological foundations of consciousness. His work focuses on contrasting conscious and unconscious processes both the psychological and neural level, using various behavioural and brain imaging methods. Recently, he extended this line of research to study the neural correlates of consciousness in pre-linguistic babies.

Dreams: an empirical way to settle the discussion between cognitive and non-cognitive theories of consciousness
The conclusions to be derived from Block's conceptual distinction between Access consciousness and Phenomenal consciousness (phenomenology or simply consciousness in what follows) have remained controversial since the publication of the paper in 1995. Do they pick up di erent properties? This debate has moved away from the conceptual domain into the empirical one. Whereas in the original paper,...
متن کاملConsciousness: mapping the theoretical landscape.
What makes us conscious? Many theories that attempt to answer this question have appeared recently in the context of widespread interest about consciousness in the cognitive neurosciences. Most of these proposals are formulated in terms of the information processing conducted by the brain. In this overview, we survey and contrast these models. We first delineate several notions of consciousness...
متن کاملIn Situ Representations and Access Consciousness in Neural Blackboard or Workspace Architectures
Phenomenal theories of consciousness assert that consciousness is based on specific neural correlates in the brain, which can be separated from all cognitive functions we can perform. If so, the search for robot consciousness seems to be doomed. By contrast, theories of functional or access consciousness assert that consciousness can be studied only with forms of cognitive access, given by cogn...
متن کاملComputational Models of Consciousness: A Taxonomy and Some Examples
This chapter aims to provide an overview of existing computational (mechanistic) models of cognition in relation to the study of consciousness, on the basis of psychological and philosophical theories and data. It examines various mechanistic explanations of consciousness in existing computational cognitive models. Serving as an example for the discussions, a computational model of the consciou...
متن کاملUnifying Theories of Consciousness, Attention, and Conscious Attention
One of the more challenging research areas in cognitive science is the attempt to understand how the brain supports consciousness. This historically philosophical endeavor is now actively studied in the sciences, with research on visual attention being an especially promising area that can further our understanding of consciousness. A major problem with this cross-disciplinary pursuit, however,...
